London based artist Espira's first solo show for cueB gallery is entitled
'Grace before meat'.
'Grace before meat'.
A
popular genre of painting dating back to the 17th century, Grace before
Meat typically portrayed a family engaged in blessing or prayer of
thanks for their food before eating. Whilst intended to be a religious
meditation, the genre's message is also secular; Be thankful for the
simple things in life.
The raw marbled depiction of meat is a recurring image throughout the series of paintings , symbolic not only of the food on our plate, but of ourselves, of our own mortality and physical appetites and limitations.
These
works act to mirror of our own vanity and greed, offering not only a
glimpse of the futility of life and the inevitable truth behind our
carefully constructed facades but also encourages us to question our
excessive lifestyles.
In
an increasingly over saturated world , perhaps the simple message of
the 'Grace before meat' genre', has more relevance now than ever before.
Espira is a self taught artist living and working in London. His work has been exhibited and celebrated internationally.
